Just like you check the batteries on your smoke detectors, The Lofty Dog recommends you check your pet's collar regularly. The start of a new year is a good time to do the Neck Check (hence the name, New Year Neck Check. Clever, huh?) - make sure the collar still fits well, not worn to the point of breaking, and that the ID on your pet is current. It's so easy to not notice a frayed collar, especially if yours is an active dog. After all, if the collar comes off, it doesn't matter what is on the tags.
While we recommend that all dogs get microchipped as well, ensuring that current information is on your dog's tag makes a huge difference - it's what gets your dog home, fast. Many people don't know to check if a found dog has a microchip, and reading that requires a whole lot more time and effort than just reading a tag and calling the phone number.
And just in case you're worried about tags falling off a collar, take a Sharpie and write your contact information on the inside of your pet's collar.
Check those necks everybody!
